Complete Mould Removal Process

The steps we take for mould treatment include the following:

  1. The property is inspected first to find the cause of the mould. Once the cause is corrected we can then continue. Failure to do this would mean the mould would come back.
  2. We contain the mould first with containment barriers. We also set up a filter to filter the air and create negative air pressure by venting the air outside
  3. Removal of non-recoverable contaminated materials.
  4. Physical Removal of the Mould (see our page How to Kill Mould)
  5. Structural drying (if required to remove moisture)
  6. Post mould test verification (see our page Mould Inspection & Assessment)

Our Mould Cleaning Process

Mould cleaning is part of our whole mould remediation process which includes 3 stages

  • Step 1 — Mould AssessmentAssess the damage, Inspect, Mould Sampling (if Required). Write Scope.
  • Step 2 — Mould Containment and Air Filtration
  • Step 3 — Mould Cleaning and Removal
  • Step 4 — Structural Drying
  • Step 5 — Post Mould Cleaning & Testing
  • We must physically Remove the mould

I once heard someone explain it to me this way. Imagine you had a barn that was completely dirty from animal droppings. Do you think that spraying over it with some magic treatment chemical is going to clean it? Obviously not and mould should be treated in the same way.

Mould must be physically removed from all surfaces inside the property. There is much hype associated with many cleaning products touting to be the best product for mould treatment. However, in the end, in many cases, a simple chemical like the detergent of vinegar is all that is required to remove the mould.

Remember that treatment of mould is not just a spray and forget solution. It is a complete process that involves drying, removal of contaminated materials and physical removal. Even if you are able to kill the mould with antimicrobials, the dead mould must be removed as dead spores and organisms are still damaging to your health.

So how do we treat mould?

Depending on the surface, we have a variety of different ways which we can treat the mould. All the methods we use generally follow the following steps.

  1. We HEPA Vacuum all surfaces first
  2. Damp wipe of surfaces (with detergent)
  3. HEPA vacuum surfaces again

All this is completed under negative air, air scrubbers and with containment barriers so that we are not allowing mould spores to spread to other locations on the property.

Mold treatment products we use

We don’t really use any branded cleaning products. We use mould treatment solutions such as

  • Detergent — basic dish washing type detergents
  • Vinegar — diluted with 20% water
  • Alcohol
  • Hydrogen Peroxide  — diluted

Antimicrobials are commonly used for mould treatment however they are hazardous to your health. They are essentially designed to kill microorganisms. This means they can also kill microorganisms in your lungs. When we do use them, we always ensure the occupants are safe and our staff wear full protective equipment.

Situations in which we do use antimicrobials is in flood situations or in sewage-contaminated properties.
